  • Description
The M1340, produced by Fiat Ansaldo, served as the primary battle tank for the Italian army during World War II, with its introduction in 1940 marking a significant development in armoured warfare. Although classified as a medium tank, its specifications aligned more closely with the light tanks of other nations. With armour thickness reaching up to 42mm and equipped with a 47mm main gun alongside four 8mm machine guns, the M1340 was manned by a four-person crew. Despite its underpowered diesel engine limiting its top speed to around 20mph, it offered advantages in terms of fire safety and operational range compared to its petrol-fueled counterparts. The M1340 was the war's most widely produced Italian tank, participating actively in battles across the Western Desert and Italy. However, it faced significant challenges against Allied forces, whose tanks outmatched it in firepower, speed, and protection. This disparity highlighted the evolving nature of armoured warfare during the conflict, as the M1340 struggled to maintain its relevance on the battlefield. Nevertheless, its production and deployment were crucial for the Italian army's efforts throughout the war. In addition to the M1340, modellers can explore the Semovente 7518 self-propelled gun variant, which enhances the armoured capabilities of Italian forces. Built by mounting the 75mm Obice da 7518 mountain gun on the M1340 chassis, the Semovente featured thicker, riveted steel plates that improved its stopping power. Interestingly, captured Australian forces utilized M13 tanks at Tobruk, and the Germans also deployed Semoventes, showcasing their versatility. This plastic kit provides an opportunity to build a historically significant tank. It includes a decal sheet featuring markings for the Italian, German, and Australian armies, making it a valuable addition for any model enthusiast.
