  • Description
Mussolini's claim of an Italian army brimming with eight million bayonets was far from reality, as the actual standing force was significantly smaller. Many soldiers were conscripted into service without a clear understanding or belief in the war they were fighting. This lack of motivation and inadequate equipment and transport led to varying levels of combat effectiveness among the troops. Despite these challenges, the Italian army achieved commendable results in key battles across North Africa and the Eastern Front. The Italian infantry was primarily armed with the Carcano Model 1891 rifle, which saw modifications over time, including the introduction of the M9141 and the M38 Carbine in 1941. These shorter rifles were more practical for infantry use. The M9138 cavalry carbine, equipped with a fixed rear sight and a folding bayonet, was also part of the arsenal. The Beretta M38 sub-machine gun was the standard for close combat, while the Breda Model 1930 light machine gun faced criticism for its slow rate of fire and reliability issues. These weapons are well-represented in the new plastic models, showcasing the evolution of Italian military equipment. The MVSN, or Blackshirts, was a paramilitary force aligned with the Fascist Party, drawing inspiration from the ancient Roman military structure. Their effectiveness varied widely, with some units comprising inexperienced recruits and others comprising seasoned veterans. The new sprue captures the diverse Italian military uniform styles, including M37 and M40 tunics and the Camiciotto Sahariana pullover smock. With a comprehensive selection of weaponry and headgear, including the M33 steel helmet and various black caps, this box of 30 customizable plastic infantry offers an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts to recreate this unique period in military history.
